Unveiling Augment3D: Splitbeam’s Cutting-Edge Tech Takes MAMMA MIA! to New Heights!
Splitbeam upgraded its lighting control capacity by purchasing a Gio@5 lighting console from ETC. ETC is a leader in theatrical lighting control, and its Eos range is found on shows from Broadway to West End and many more productions in between.
The compact yet powerful Gio@5 is a perfect touring console with the most up-to-date technology.
We deployed the console at the MAMMA MIA! production, unveiled at the Artscape Opera House in Cape Town before it transferred to Montecasino Teatro. One of the critical features @5 is the new Augment3D tool, which enables programming in a 3D augmented reality format, which Splitbeam implemented for the first time on a South African Stage.
By using reference markers in real space that correspond to the 3D model on the desk, and using a smartphone or tablet, you can interface with the console so that it knows where you are in space. You can then tell the fixtures in your rig to ‘find you’ so that they all point at the place where you are standing. This revolutionary feature makes the recording of focus palettes and presets orders of magnitude faster than it used to be. Denis Hutchison, the Lighting Designer on Mamma Mia, estimated that this feature saved the team around 4 hours of programming time on the desk.
