Everything has got a bit blurred around the edges now… it’s becoming hard to recall details about specific cities or venues, or remember what was where, but here goes.

We have been in Beijing for a week now. I really like this city; probably my favourite thus far. The hotel and the food are great too, which is definitely an added benefit when touring. Beijing has also been everyone’s highlight city when it comes to sightseeing - home to the Great Wall, the Forbidden City and many more. We took ourselves off to see the Great Wall yesterday, and were overwhelmed with awe.

I’m currently in my hotel room in Wuhan, having managed to throw together a semi-decent breakfast. Food is often a gamble around here, you’re never quite sure. While the hotel breakfasts and restaurant/fast food options have been relatively decent and satisfactory thus far – and sometimes even really good, occasionally you’re forced to settle and be grateful for any food at all. Wuhan has been a bit of both so far.

“I’m in Nanjing today. It’s my day off, finally. I’m currently on tour with the international tour of Chicago 2018/19 as sound number two. My roles on this production are mainly system tech and deputy operator.

I was supposed to have been documenting this tour from the beginning of the China leg, which was 3 weeks ago, and the fact that I’m only getting around to making a start of it today is testimony to the way things go when you’re touring mainland China, doing a new venue each week – there is no time!

Long term technical reinforcement a Good Idea

Gearhouse Splitbeam has undertaken to support the arts, and theatre, by making sure that ‘this generation of South Africans as well as those to come, have world-class theatre on their doorstep’ according to Director, Alistair Kilbee. This ethos is what prompted their involvement with an interdisciplinary ‘incubation’ space in Maboneng to which Splitbeam supplies Lighting, Audio and Audio Visual on a long-term rental basis, ensuring that the artists at work there experience the nuances that technical reinforcement can bring to their work throughout the course of the work’s development.

Walking With Women

SOUTH AFRICA: Celebrating the centenary of Nelson Mandela and in support of the Elders’ #WalkTogetherCampaign, the first ever global showcase for women in the event production industry saw interconnected events laid on in South Africa, India, UK, Guinea and Brazil. Supported by the Gearhouse Group’s Splitbeam arm, the Johannesburg #WomenWalkTogether event required lighting and audio equipment to bolster the Market Theatre Complex’s, Barney Simon Theatre’s existing setup, as well as supplying an LED screen and A/V Equipment to the market nearby. The equipment was all operated by women from the Gearhouse Academy and SARA (South Africa Roadies Association).
